02 · THE MEANING

THREE WORDS.

ONE MARTIAL ART.

The name Tae Kwon-Do comes from three Korean words that together describe the physical and mental principles at the heart of the martial art.

TAE

Foot

Represents kicking, jumping and techniques performed using the feet and legs.

KWON

Represents punching, striking, blocking and techniques performed using the hands and arms.

DO

The Way

The path or way of life. It represents the discipline, character and principles developed through training.

A MODERN KOREAN MARTIAL ART

Tae Kwon-Do was developed in Korea during the 20th century, bringing together powerful physical techniques with a strong emphasis on discipline, self-control and personal development.

Today, it is practised around the world by people of all ages, but the idea at its heart remains simple: Tae Kwon-Do is about developing the person as well as the martial artist.
